The disorientation that comes from the fact that those two characters have grown up, ended up together, and had a child and that Satoru (and by extension, the audience) doesn't see any of it is kind of the point. It's a big part of what makes his actions a sacrifice. It's supposed to feel out of nowhere. That's true.

Because the movie was the true superior adaptation. The visual and sounds of the movie will add layer and depth to the experience.
